Dog park etiquette: rules every owner and walker should know.

A good dog park visit is safe, fun, and easy on everyone. A few simple habits make it happen.

Before you go

  • Check the park's rules. Posted signs usually list the hours, vaccination or license requirements, and any limits on dogs or people.
  • Make sure your dog is ready. Your dog should come when called, have up-to-date vaccinations, and be comfortable around other dogs. Ask your veterinarian if you are not sure.
  • Skip the visit if your dog is unwell, in heat, or recovering from an injury or illness.
  • Pick a quiet time for a first visit. Fewer dogs means fewer surprises.

At the gate

Watch the dogs for a moment before you go in. If something looks tense, wait. Use the double gate if there is one, keep your dog on a leash until you are inside, and take it off only when the entry area is clear and calm.

While you are inside

  • Stay close and pay attention. Put your phone away. You are responsible for your dog's behavior at all times.
  • Pick up after your dog, every time, and fill in any holes if your dog digs.
  • Leave toys and treats at home unless the park allows them. Food and toys can start fights.
  • Watch the play. Step in calmly if play gets too rough, and take a break if your dog seems overwhelmed. Our guide to dog body language shows what to look for.
  • Keep children safe. Supervise them closely and keep them out of the play area unless the park allows them.

When to leave

Leave if your dog is stressed, play turns into repeated bullying, a fight starts, or you simply feel uneasy. Ending a visit early is not a failure. It protects your dog.

If you walk other people's dogs

Only take a dog to the park if the owner has agreed. Follow the same rules as an owner, keep the dog's safety first, and keep to the number of dogs the park and your city allow. Never take dogs you cannot control into an off-leash area.

Find a dog park near you

Dote's location pages list dog parks mapped by OpenStreetMap volunteers in cities across the U.S. Always check the park's own rules and hours before you go.
